Swathi murder case accused P. Ramkumar in a bail application filed before the principal district sessions court here has claimed that he did not kill her. The plea is likely to be heard this week.
Ramkumar stated that he did not attempt to slit his throat and that some persons who accompanied the police during his arrest assaulted him with a blade and then made up the suicide story.
Relying on the version of an alleged eyewitness, who claimed that Swathi was assaulted by a person two days before the murder, Ramkumar’s counsel G. Krishnamoorthy said, “The police are screening the real offender by implicating the petitioner, who is innocent and a poor person hailing from a village.”
Mr. Krishnamoorthy claimed that the petitioner was in no way connected with the crime. He alleged that the police had foisted a false case on Ramkumar.
Ramkumar assured the court that he would cooperate with the investigation, and would not in any manner tamper with the prosecution witnesses.
The suspect has been shifted to Puzhal prison from the Royapettah Government Hospital.
