Nothing is worse than scarring your face and body
skin. The burn victims of these have suffered not only during the accident but
even after that as their skin gets damaged beyond repair. Many have lost their
confidence because of this. But, this won't be the case anymore! Scientists
have found artificial skin that can used to help burn victims! This will
definitely reduce their trauma to a certain extent.
Using stem cells, the scientists have discovered and
managed to successfully grow artificial skin tissues. These tissues can be used
on the victim by transplants. Replacing the skin from a different part of them
or from another individual, these tissues will resemble like real skin.

Scientists from
the RIKEN Centre for Developmental Biology (CDB), Tokyo University of Science
and other institutions in Japan implanted these 3D tissues into living mice.
To perform this, the researchers took cells from mouse gums and used chemicals
to transform them into stem cell-like induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells.
The cells properly developed into an embryoid body (EB) - a 3D clump of cells
that partially resembles the developing embryo in an actual body. The
researchers created EBs from iPS cells and then implanted multiple EBs into
immune-deficient mice. This changed into differentiated tissue, following the
pattern of an actual embryo. After this, the scientists transplanted
them out of those mice and into the skin tissue of other mice, where the
tissues developed normally as integumentary tissue - the tissue between the
outer and inner skin. These implanted tissues made normal connections with the
surrounding nerve and muscle tissues, allowing it to function normally.

It was noted
that the skin had normal functional properties like having hair follicles and
secreting glands for sweat and oil.

The scientists
also said they are coming closer to develop actual organs in lab, and the
tissues grown on this could be used an alternative to chemical testing on
animals!
