When 35-year-old photographer Bhagyaraj M was declared brain dead after a road accident, his family fulfilled his long-standing wish of doing something for the society. They donated his organs.
Bhagyaraj was returning to Chennai from Kalpakkam on March 2 when his bike rammed a tree at Thirukalukundram in Kancheepuram district. He was rushed to Chengalpet Government Hospital with head injuries, from where he was taken to a private hospital at Vadapalani in Chennai. A CT scan revealed that he had a clot in his brain.
On March 3, he was wheeled into surgery. However, the operation couldn't save him. On March 4, doctors found that he wasn't responding to external stimuli. A team was called in to declare brain death.
Brain death is the total and irreversible loss of all brain functions. However, all other vital organs continue to function normally, making them suitable for donation.
Bhagyaraj was then taken to Stanley Medical College Hospital. "We confirmed that he was brain dead on Saturday morning. We approached the family to seek consent for organ donation," said S Senthil Kumar, the coordinator for organ transplant at the hospital.
Although the family was initially reluctant to donate, hoping Bhagyaraj would regain consciousness, they finally relented.
While his liver and a kidney were donated to Stanley Medical College Hospital, another kidney was sent to Government General Hospital. His heart and lungs were donated to Fortis Malar Hospital and his corneas were sent to Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Egmore.
Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife and two children, aged two and four years old.
