Happy Bhogi.

In a scenario of events centered around the harassment of Pongal-the harvest festival, we enter into the first day of the festival-the Bhogi.

Bhogi is the first day of Pongal and is celebrated to honor Indra-the god of clouds and rains. Lord Indra is a main deity of the farmers, the one who brings fertility and good harvest to the land.

All the houses are whitewashed and cleaned. You'd find houses adorned with Kolams-a floor drawing design. People would get rid of unwanted goods and clean their houses from top to bottom.

In the villages, a special Puja would be conducted before the commencement of Paddy harvest. Farmers worship the sun and the earth by anointing their ploughs and sickles with sandal paste.

Another ritual which would be abundant in the villages is the Bhogi Mantalu, when useless household articles are thrown into a fire made of wood and cow-dung cakes. Girls dance around the bonfire, singing songs in praise of the gods, the spring and the harvest.

With the events happening around the lives of farmers, let us join together in making these 4 days prosperous to them. Happy Bhogi Pongal people.
