The Reserve Bank Of India adds one more denomination to the current list of Indian Rupees. The pics of the supposedly announced 2000 rupee notes are going viral over the internet. Here's more about it.
Remember the scene from Vijay Antony starred Pichaikaran movie? Some of us might remember this scene about a begger connecting to a live economic program and telling 1000 and 500 rupees notes should be banned to avoid ease of transfer of black money. Well experts have been urging the RBI about this for quite a long time. There have been protests and other activities for the ban of 1000 and 500 denomination notes but the RBI doesn't seem to heed about it much. In fact it has it's own set of diktats that it announced the release of a 2000 denomination in the month of February few days back.
The news follows a back up of an article released in The Hindu Businessline article, dated October 21. The news tells that the notes have already been printed at the press in Mysuru and has already been dispatched. But there hasn't been any official announcement from the Government or the RBI regarding such denominations being issued.
Up till now the highest denomination ever printed was for 10000 rupees issued back in the years 1938 and 1954. Currently the highest denomination is for rupee 1000 which will be dethroned if the 2000 rupee note goes into circulation.
The notes are generally printed at four printing presses located at Nashik, Dewas, Mysore and Salboni. Coins are minted at the four mints at Mumbai, Noida, Kolkata and Hyderabad. If released this would the first currency in recent times to release without a picture of the Father of Our Nation - Mahatma Gandhiji.
Though official conformation hasn't been received yet, pictures of this alleged 2000 rupee note has been going viral all over twitter. Twitteratis think this is the new big deal and have been debating about this denomination for the past two days. What do you think about this? Reply in the comments section.
