17 year old brain dead boy gives life to 3 people

On December 12 in Bangalore, Kiran Kumar P and seven of his friends ventured out on a joyride in a sedan. But the speed thrill ended in tragedy with the car ramming a roadside tree and leaving Kiran brain-dead. On Sunday afternoon, it was time for another speedy ride as an ambulance ferried the 17-year-old's heart across 30km in 32 minutes to be transplanted on a 35-year-old man.

Declared brain dead on Saturday evening in BGS Global Hospitals, Kengeri, Kiran has given a ray of hope to three people already. On Sunday, his eyes, kidneys and liver too were harvested. His liver was transplanted to a 48-year-old woman and one of his kidneys to a 58-year-old man.

While the heart transplant was done at Narayana Hrudayalaya, Hosur Road, the kidney and liver transplants were done at BGS itself. The ambulance carrying the heart left BGS Hospitals at 12.50pm and reached Narayana Hrudayalaya at 1.22pm.

Kiran was the fourth teenager to die in the accident. Two of the eight boys in the Hyundai Verna car were killed on the spot, while the third one succumbed to injuries late last week.

On Thursday, Kiran who had suffered serious head injuries, was shifted to BGS Global Hospitals. However, during the two days of treatment he showed no improvement. "On Friday, we were told by doctors that his blood pressure had shot up and he had slipped into a vegetative state," his father Prabhu Kumar said. Recalling the incident, the emotional dad said, "That morning Kiran and his friends made a last-minute plan to go to Nandi Hills. By the time we knew, he was already in a hospital."

"During the last one week in hospital, we had time to think and when doctors asked us if we wanted to donate his organs, it felt like the right thing to do. If someone gets a new life of because of him, he will have their blessings," added Prabhu. And thus the green corridor was set up.

Surgery took 90 mins

Kiran's heart was retrieved by Dr Julius Punnen, cardiothoracic transplant surgeon from Narayana Health City, and taken to the hospital in Hosur Road. The heart transplant surgery took around 90 minutes and the recipient was a 35-year-old patient from Delhi, who had been waiting for a donor heart for the past five months, said Narayana Hrudayalaya. Kiran's eyes have been moved Narayana Nethralaya, liver transplanted to a 49-year-old man from KR Puram at BGS Hospital and one kidney given to a 38-year-old lady. "We are still identifying a recipient for the second kidney," said a BGS Global Hospital spokesperson.
